So what are smileys?
They are simply graphical representations of human emotions
that you can send to someone whilst you're online chatting and
typing to them. In fact, what many people do not know is that
the very first emoticon or smiley was the exclamation mark and
the question mark. They were created so that the reader would
understand better what the writer had to say in terms of their
emotional thought processes. Now they are so widely used we
think of them as normal things in the English language but at
one point in time they were the smileys of their age!
The modern age smiley that we know was first officially made
famous by Scott Fahlman in 1982 when he was posting on the CMU
bulletin system. He would use : - ) for a smile and then use a
: - ( for a frown. He did this because he believed that his
readers would not know if he was being serious or being
sarcastic. After that, the use became very common and spread
like wildfire throughout the internet. It should be noted that
although Scott was officially credited for being the creator of
the very first smiley, I think it would be silly to think that
he was the very first guy to use it. He just made it
popular.
Unfortunately, Fahlman didn't save his posts and they were
nearly forgotten for 20 years until Jeff Baird found a backup
of the posts in his personal archive. The yellow smiley that we
see common these days we made popular by the brothers Murray
and Bernard Spain when they exploited and popularized it by
putting it on computer buttons, coffee mugs, t shirts and
bumper stickers for cars. Then in 1980 a small smiley emoticon
was incorporated in Windows winding font tables.
Now I can go on forever about the history of smileys, but
you know what? Thats probably not what you're here for.
